How to Set Release Conditions to Restrict Content

Brightspace Content is Getting Upgraded

Beginning with the Fall 2027 semester, Brightspace courses will begin using the New Content Experience by default. Additionally, Instructors now have the ability to enable or disable the New Content Experience in their own courses ahead of the change in Fall 2027. For more information about this transition, see our New Content Experience Transition page.

Release conditions in Brightspace allow Instructors to set conditions that students have to meet in order to have access to certain content items. While the available list of release conditions is too long to list here (a full list ), examples include releasing files based on group or section enrollment, releasing an answer key for an exam based on completion of a quiz, or releasing the next content module after completion of a specific activity.

For this guide, we will work with the example of releasing a Discussion topic once students have submitted an Assignment. This same process applies to many areas across Brightspace including Content, Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, and more areas.

How to add Release Conditions

  1. Go to edit the Discussion Topic you want to restrict access to
  2. On the Edit Topic page, click Availability Dates and Conditions
  3. Click Add Release Conditions
  4. Click Create New
  5. For Condition Type, select the action you want to be required before this item becomes available.
    • For this situation, we'll use Assignments > Submission to Folder
  6. Select the specific Assignment students need to submit to before gaining access to this Discussion Topic.
  7. Click Create
  8. Click Save and Close on the Discussion Topic to save your changes

Once you have a Release Condition applied, you'll see a note on the item showing that requirement.Â
