Jesús G. Ruiz (he, him, his) is an assistant professor of the practice in Caribbean Studies at the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (CLACX). At CLACX, he also serves as both the director of the Caribbean Studies Minor and program coordinator of the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, as well as the Simon Collier Summer Research Awards.
Jesús's research explores slavery, freedom, and Black political thought in the Atlantic World. His first book, The Black Royalists: Haiti and A Politics of Freedom in the Atlantic World, which examines the politics of royalism in the Haitian Revolution, is currently under contract with Harvard University Press.
Jesús is a first-generation citizen of the U.S., born in Los Angeles, CA, to immigrants from Sonora, Mexico. He was raised in Maricopa County, Arizona and became the first in his family to attend college. He has a B.A. in Spanish with honors from St. Lawrence University and an M.A. in Caribbean studies from The University at Buffalo (SUNY). He will lead Moore College, where he'll live with his wife, Elise, and his two boys, Marcos and Santos.
