He began neurosurgical training at the University of Connecticut and completed the majority of his training at Thomas Jefferson University. Since then he has completed a fellowship in Spinal Neurosurgery and Functional Neurosurgery both at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation.\u00a0 Dr. Sharan leads the Surgical Epilepsy program at Thomas Jefferson University and has been awarded the William H. Sweet Young Investigator Award sponsored by Medtronic, Inc. He is an NIH investigator on projects associated with human brain cell infection and neuronal dysfunction in AIDS and genetic influences on human epilepsy. He is also the Program Director of the Jefferson Neurosurgery residency and has been awarded the William Buchheit Award for best teacher of the year multiple times. He was recently named the President of the North American Neuromodulation Society.\u00a0 He is also chair of the Strategic Planning Committee and now president-elect for the Congress of Neurological Surgeons.\u00a0 His work focuses on: complex spinal reconstruction, epilepsy surgery, deep brain stimulation surgery, and neuromodulation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speaker:\u00a0Ashwini D.
