Curriculum

  • Data Analytics and AI

    Fall 2027 - 3 credits

Data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are ubiquitous in modern technology and have become essential tools in all fields, including science, engineering, medicine, business and finance. This course will cover essential concepts behind today鈥檚 commonly used data analytics and AI methods.

The emphasis will be on learning to implement these methods and not mathematical derivations. Widely available platforms such as Python and R would be used.

  • Probabilistic Methods in Decision-Making

    Fall 2027 - 3 credits

The planning and design of most engineering systems is done under conditions of听uncertainty. Many of the parameters are not precisely known, and subjective decisions听have to be made at all stages. Traditional engineering analysis and design procedures听have accounted for these uncertainties by the use of empirical safety factors.

Such an听approach is being increasingly replaced in recent decades by more rational procedures听that quantify the uncertainties in the system and develop design rules based on acceptable听levels of probability of failure of the system. Therefore, the knowledge of probability听and statistics has become important in the design of modern engineering systems.听听

This course is designed to familiarize the students with the techniques required for the听application of probability and statistics to engineering problems. No prior knowledge of听probability theory is required. The emphasis is on application to a wide variety of areas听in civil, mechanical, chemical, biomedical and electrical engineering.

  • The Language of Business: Accounting & Finance

    Fall 2027 - 3 credits

This course develops an integrated understanding of financial accounting and managerial finance. The first portion focuses on the measurement, aggregation and evaluation of economic information presented in general-purpose external financial statements.

Students develop fluency in the 鈥渓anguage of business鈥 by learning how financial statements are compiled, what they communicate and how accounting choices relate to economic reality. Building on that foundation, the course turns to financial decision making: the time value of money, investment rules, securities, capital budgeting, valuation, risk and return, CAPM and discount rates.

Together, the two parts of the course prepare students to move from interpreting a company鈥檚 historical financial position and performance to evaluating investments and making valuation and capital-allocation decisions.

  • Organizational Effectiveness: Leadership, Teamwork & Negotiations

    Fall 2027 - 3 credits

Effective managers must lead themselves and others, work productively through interdependence and conflict and mobilize people and organizations through change. Thus, this course integrates three complementary perspectives on managerial effectiveness: leading teams and organizations, negotiating with interdependent parties and leading organizational change.

This course explores the foundational principles of organizational behavior and leadership, equipping students with the skills to foster collaboration and drive effectiveness in professional settings.

The course focuses on key concepts in organizational behavior, including team dynamics, communication, motivation, and decision-making, as well as the principles of leadership, with an emphasis on practical application in business contexts. Through experiential exercises, case studies and simulations, students will analyze group dynamics, enhance their ability to lead in diverse environments and strengthen their negotiation and problem-solving skills.
