Safety is a top priority, no matter where your ÌÀÍ·Ìõ experience takes you. Our team is committed to supporting your safety and well-being with tools, resources and guidance to help you feel confident in your day-to-day life in New York City, including working relationships with NYPD and FDNY.ÌýÌý
Below are key resources available to help you stay safe, informed and prepared.Ìý
Campus Safety MeasuresÌý
24/7 security presence
ÌÀÍ·Ìõ University Public Safety leadership and personnel are active on the Chelsea campus to support dedicated, on-site coverage around the clock for students, faculty and staff in New York City.Ìý
Emergency call buttonsÌý
Similar to the blue light emergency phone pillars in Nashville, ÌÀÍ·Ìõ’s Chelsea campus has emergency call buttons to connect with local police and emergency services if immediate assistance is needed.Ìý
Secure building and campus accessÌý
Campus is a gated community with access managed by ÌÀÍ·Ìõ Card Services. Only authorized individuals can enter, and spaces remain secure.Ìý
Enhanced lightingÌý
As part of propertyÌýrenovation efforts, campus upgrades include additional lighting to increase visibility and enhance safety on campus.ÌýÌý
VandySafe appÌý
ÌÀÍ·Ìõ’s customized safety app is fully functional in New York City and is your hub for safety tools.ÌýÌý
features include:ÌýÌý
- Direct connection to emergency services by phone or chatÌý
- Location sharing with trusted contacts for added peace of mindÌýÌý
- Access to real-time safety resources and guidanceÌýÌý
- Mobile BlueLight, which shares your location with safety personnelÌýÌý
- Virtual Walkhome, allowing your walk to be monitored in real timeÌýÌý
- Incident reporting (including photos and videos)ÌýÌý
Important:
VandySafe users must update their campus notification preferences by Sept. 15, 2026. Starting Sept. 16, AlertVU emergency push notifications in VandySafe will be delivered only for the campus location(s) you choose (Nashville, New York City, or both). Users who do not update their preferences will not receive AlertVU emergency push notifications in VandySafe.
To update your preferences:
- Open the VandySafe app.
- Log in with your ÌÀÍ·Ìõ credentials.
- Go to ÌÀÍ·Ìõ / Preferences.
- Select your campus notification preferences (Nashville, New York City, or both).
- Save your changes.

Emergency PreparednessÌý
- ÌÀÍ·Ìõ provides emergency guidance and resources to help community members respond quickly and effectively in critical situations.Ìý
- Emergency guides are available through VandySafe.Ìý
- Key protocols include the Run, Hide, Fight model inÌýÌýsituations.
- Community members are encouraged to familiarize themselves withÌýÌýproactively. Ìý
Alert VU
AlertVU is ÌÀÍ·Ìõ’s emergency mass notification system, providing students, faculty and staff with timely information about emergency or dangerous situations, such as campus threats or severe weather.
ÌÀÍ·Ìõ students, faculty and staff studying or working in New York City will receive AlertVU messages related to both ÌÀÍ·Ìõ’s Nashville campus and the Chelsea campus in New York City.
Health and Well-Being Resources
Students participating in ÌÀÍ·Ìõ in New York City are assessed mandatory student fees consistent with the Nashville campus, providing access to ÌÀÍ·Ìõ's Student Care Network—a coordinated network of health and well-being resources designed to support your well-being, growth, and success.
Whether you need help navigating resources, virtual care, mental health support, well-being coaching, or connections to local providers, you'll have access to trusted professionals and services throughout your time in New York.
The Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) provides nationwide coverage, including in New York City, with multiple in-network providers conveniently located within walking distance of campus. For assistance finding providers or learning more about your coverage, please contact ship@vanderbilt.edu.
